July 8-July 28
This summer I attended a program at MIAD for three weeks and the class I took was, The Figure in Color,
We learned about the human figure and we started out with charcoal as our first medium. after several quick sketches we would move into longer poses with the models and each time I would notice that drawing more loosely onto the page gave me a better result, I would have to be less controlled and actually draw everything from top to bottom and then if I had time I would incorporate the details like fingers, nose, eyebrows.
A couple of lessons in we moved into using conte sticks in black, brown, and burnt orange. this was a step up from charcoal and in the direction in color, we would try different techniques. For example We would study the models body with just using shadow, so we weren't able to draw lines but use the side of the conte stick and draw only shadows in order to draw out the human figure, which personally was my favorite part. We then started shading in color onto the page using charcoal powder and using a needed eraser in order to draw in highlights.
On the last week we started to work with color and to do that we opened up our Rembrandt dry pastels, I was very nervous because I thought it was going to be very hard to blend in colors but surprisingly I had a very fun time and after several pieces I got the hang of it and I knew right a away what colors I really stick to the most. Also one thing that I loved the most that I learned was that I could tell what colors would go well with the models skin tones and how the instructor challenged us with colored paper so it would force us to use other colors in order to achieve the same endpoint.
When I was in the program I saw that they had programs going on at the same time that we could take and I was really interested with with the interior design and architecture one. I decided to stop in and take it because I'm interested in following that career and I figured that I should take it as a learning experience and see if that was really what I wanted to do. After that night I had a lot of fun and did notice that I wanted to follow that career choice.
Above all this course was very fun for me and I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to take it my junior year so I could get a glimpse of how an actual college art class would be like.
