Tryptich (choice piece)
Exhibition Text
“We’re the Change” was created with three canvases to show three perspectives of myself. The first one being the way I perceive myself as an artist, the second as to how I affect the community I live in and the third (final) one as to how it affects me. My main goal is demonstrating how I plan on growing as an artist and incorporating my art into my community to speak about the issues going on and having our new generation to be the change in order to live more happily.
Inspiration
How this piece came to be was because of previous photos that I took throughout the year. One was of a hand pose that I would do especially when I was traveling. Something to look "artistic" at the time I though but never really thought of how I could use it in an art piece until now I decided to use it as a symbol for myself. The hand would represent how I see myself as an artist which is always trying to make a change whether its really small and only helps one person or so many. So the hand could mean how I'm "reaching out to help make a change." Lastly my second inspiration was a photo I had a friend take as I walked in the water to again seem more pleasing to the eye.
These two pictures helped me create "We're the change" as it helped me realize how I view myself as an artist, how my community affects me and lastly how I affect it myself.

Planning
When planning for this project I did several sketches on how I wanted the final piece to look like. I noticed I was having a hard time drawing hands so I tried practicing and deciding based on the pictures, which one would look best. I even tried brush strokes and different colors to use for the painting. (How I wanted the explosion to look).
Process
Building process of the three canvases and applying gesso to them so I could put the base coat of them all before I projected the images on them.
- Began to project the picture of my hand for the first canvas (1-4)
- Moved on to the second canvas and used the picture of myself at the lake. Started out my measuring the body on the canvas and moving the easel back and forth so the projection of me can come out to the size that I want it. -Did the same thing for the third canvas.
- On the bottom of the third canvas I came up with the idea to use the same projection of myself to draw on the added people that were suppose to show how I would influence my city with my art.
Mixing colors adding more white and brown to math the shading of the arm. At first I made it too dark so I had to go over it with a lighter shade and then add the highlights to give it more dimension. Later I painted the nails and moved on to the top area of the canvas where the "explosion" was happening, starting off with the color orange and moving with red.
I then moved on to the third canvas where I started with the "explosion", again starting with the color orange and then moving on with the color red.
Leaving the middle canvas last, I decided to switch things up and start with the color red around the edges and then moving closer to the inside of it with a dark orange. After applying that I put a bright yellow in the center. I felt as if something was missing to make it look more intense, so terribly I decided to add the color black and dark gray on the inside and the outer edges of it. I soon realized that it looked terrible and blending did not help as it made the yellow look green and dirty. I should have waited for the colors to dry before adding in the darker colors to add more intensity to the "explosion".

Expirementation
In this first canvas I experimented with the color off thew arm and the shading to make the painting show more bone with highlights.
Another thing that I experimented with were the colors. |
Some of the things that I had to experiment with were on how to make more people following me. I could have drawn them freehand but then I came up with the idea to use my picture over and over again just move it around and re-size it to where I needed it.

Critique & Reflection
This project forced me to (in a positive way) reflect upon myself and the reasons I create art. This piece was quite difficult for me at first as I couldn't really think of how I thought of myself as an artist.
Connection to Act
1) Clearly explain how you are able to to identify the cause-affect relationships between your inspiration and its affect upon your artwork.
In my inspirations, their causes that affected them to create their pieces were due to the fact that they were pictures that I had taken before hand so it seemed more personal. They helped me know what I wanted to put onto each canvas.
2)What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The overall approach regarding the topic of my inspiration was to show others how I plan to make my artin a form to talk about the current issues going on with social justice and how I hope it affects those around me to raise their voice and make a change.
3)What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
The generalizations and conclusion I've discovered throughout my research was the fact that artists find different ways to portray their feelings in such an intriguing way.
4) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea around my inspirational research was how I saw myself as an artist, how I affect my community and how it affects me.
5)What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
While reading my research the type of conclusions that I made were how I wanted the finishing piece to look like, so I learned from previous art pieces my mistakes and I wanted to better them by doing this project.
